Urinating in public is common in this commercial capital

Known as the commercial capital of north Karnataka, Hubli does not have enough number of public toilets, forcing people to use public places like school grounds and gardens to relieve themselves.

In all, there are about 100 public toilets in the city. This is inadequate, considering the growing population of the city and its status as an educational and commercial hub.

Several busy areas in the city do not have public toilets. And the existing ones are badly maintained. Some of them are broken, while some have no doors. Due to unavailability of water and lack of maintenance, the toilets stink and not in a condition to use.

The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has miserably failed in maintaining the toilets. Most of the toilets were constructed in 2005-06 and were given to private agencies to maintain. Due to the apathy of private agencies and lack of monitoring by the HDMC, toilets have rendered useless and a breeding ground for stray animals.

Main roads like the Court Circle, Dajibanpeth road, Koppikar road and swimming pool complex road do not have decent toilets and in some places there are no toilets at all.

"Some of the public toilets have not been cleaned for many days and we can't find public toilets in some areas of the city," said Iranna J, a resident.

Even the portable toilet booth, put by the corporation near the swimming pool complex road is stinking a lot. It has not been cleaned for many days. The stench is unbearable ,compelling people to cover their nose while walking on the road. Durgad bail corporater Rajeshri Jedi said, "There are no toilets in Belgaum galli and Butter market. People urinate in open spaces. We have given an estimation for construction of toilets to the corporation. The portable fibre toilet booths put in some places are serving no purpose."

New toilets to come up

Speaking to TOI, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation commissioner K V Trilokchandra said: "We have planned to construct new toilet complexes in the city association with private agencies. We have placed fiber toilets in some areas as a temporary measure."

Public-private initiative planned to promote Hubli as investment hub

A new public-private platform is planned to promote Hubli-Dharwad region as the next investment destination in the State. The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) Hubli Chapter has come forward to help promote the twin city in various national and global meets.

The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister and Dharwad district-in-charge Minister, Mr Jagadish Shettar, addressing a TiECon 2012 session on 'Taking Leap From Rs 100 crore to Rs 10,000 crore: Pune Story and Hubli Road ahead,' said, "The district administration will support the public-private initiative and help bring together authorities, entrepreneurs and eminent personalities to promote Hubli-Dharwad as the next investment destination in the State."

"The public-private platform will be constituted in the next two months and I will instruct the district administration to reach out to the private sector to help constitute a co-ordination committee to being the process," he added.

Dharwad Deputy Commissioner, Mr Darpan Jain, made a presentation on the initiatives taken by the district administration to improve the infrastructure in the region and on the further plans like upgradation of the airport, Bus Rapid Transport System, rolling out of the 24x7 water supply project to the entire city and others.

As the moderator of the session, Prof Ashok Shettar, Principal of BVB College of Engineering, said the TiE Hubli Chapter was ready to take up the responsibility of co-ordination on the issue, and Mr Jain felt there was a need for a more concerted and co-ordinated effort for marketing the region. "We will take up the proposal for discussion and act on constituting a co-ordination committee within two months," Mr Shettar said.

The Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) President speaking on the occasion, said the chamber has already joined hands with the administration in promoting the region. "We facilitated setting up of permanent exhibition centre in north Karnataka to come up in Hubli-Dharwad. Co-ordinated with Apeda and Kappec to set up cold storage facility in the region," he added.

Lessons from Pune

Speaking on the occasion, Commodore Anand Khandekar, President of Puna Chamber of Commerce and Industry, suggested a public-private platform is crucial to promote the twin cities.

Mr Khandekar, elaborating on the Pune model of developing the city into an investor-friendly region, talked about the strategy adapted by them to promote the city.

The Maratha Chamber of Commerce took up the responsibility of promoting the city through various initiatives. "There was no response in the beginning. But once it started, there was no need for further marketing," he said. anil.u@thehindu.co.in

Hubli to be promoted as the next IT hub

The Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (Keonics) is once again making efforts to push north Karnataka as the next IT hub in the State.

With Bangalore's saturation and companies looking for alternate locations for expansion, the Keonics has woken up to promote Hubli as an IT destination. In order to tap investments, it has lowered the rentals at IT Park Hubli.

Keonics quoted the NASSCOM survey findings that Hubli-Dharwad has 38 per cent cost advantage among the tier II cities in the country. This will be Keonics' second attempt to push for the north Karnataka region as an IT destination.

According to Mr H. Devanand, Manager, IT Park-Hubli, the Keonics has come out with a special rental package to encourage IT industries to set up base in Hubli.

"In order to attract them, especially the software developers, we have further reduced rent rate and fixed at Rs 5 a square feet a month. Also we may relax conditions placed before," he explained.

Currently Hubli-Dharwad houses companies like IonIdea Inc, Sankalp Semiconductor, Nabros, Neilsoft, Pro-Solutions, ClickHubli, Web Dreams and Able Design Engineering Services. Few new companies are being incubated inside the campus of BVB College of Engineering and Technology.

Keonics' move comes after two companies successfully set up their operations.

Mr Manohar Joshi, Director-Systems, IonIdea said, "The major benefits from business point of view, Hubli offers cost of living advantage of 25 per cent to 30 per cent of margins. We can afford to keep the bench and groom the freshers and make them industry-ready at relatively much lower cost."

"We have also discovered that the communication level has improved well in recent past among fresh graduates and they can be groomed to face global clients effectively and efficiently. It looks to be a workable place to establish ITES and professional services from Hubli in a cost effective manner," he added.

In the recent past, connectivity both in terms of logistics and communication has improved in the town, said Mr. Ashok Shettar, a senior TiE-Hubli member and Principal, BVB College of Engineering & Technology.

However, what is most attractive in the town and surrounding areas today is the good work-life balance one gets. "Now people are increasingly complaining about quality of life in Bangalore," said Mr Shettar.

Simple life and low cost of living coupled with good opportunities for development and growth make Hubli a suitable destination for the IT sector

Emily Kumpel, a civil engineering PhD student of the University of California, who often visits India for research purpose was disturbed to see Hubli people waiting for long hours for water to arrive. What she noticed was the city hardly adhered to its water supply schedule, thereby causing a great deal of inconvenience to residents in several areas.

'Intermittent water supply in India' being her research topic, Emily, on her returning to California discussed the issue with her professor Tapan Parikh at the Berkeley School of Information, University of California and a few students at the Stanford School of Business.

What emerged out of this scholarly discussion was a brilliant idea that appears to go a long way in helping people of Hubli keep their date with water supply. People will no longer have to wait for indefinite hours for the volveman to release water. If they subscribe to the services of Nextdrop, a social-business venture started by Emily and her team in Hubli, they will get information about the exact day and time of water supply to their respective areas on their mobile phones. So they can make sure they are at home during those hours.
When the idea of providing information to citizens through SMS struck them, Emily and her team, comprising students from the Stanford School of Business and the University of California, pooled funds from the class and decided to run a pilot project in Hubli. On arriving at Hubli, they came up with their novel project - Nextdrop - and launched it on a trial basis to cater to 230 families in a Hubli area.

Encouraged by the overwhelming response to the pilot project, the group deiced to convert the project into a full fledged social business in Hubli. Plans are afoot to extend it to Dharwad in the coming days.

Nextdrop is an integrated network between residents and valvemen. Explaining about how the system works, Nextdrop co-founder and CEO Anu Sridharan said valvemen will use their mobile phones to call an interactive voice response (IVR) system to inform people well in advance about when they plan to open the valves in a particular area. These reports will be used to generate SMS updates that will be sent to local residents 30-60 minutes prior to delivery.

In addition, the residents will be contacted randomly through IVR system to verify the accuracy of information provided by valvemen. Updates from valvemen will be turned into streaming visual data using a web-based dashboard powered by Google maps. This tool will help engineers track the status of valves throughout the city in real time, while crowd-sourced information will help compare the feedback from residents with reports from valvemen to create a feedback loop. In case of a conflict between two reports, engineers at the utility will be alerted, enabling them to address the problem.

To keep the social business running, each family will be charged Rs 10 per month for the services. For BPL families charges are Rs 5, said Anu.

"The technological principles behind Nextdrop are not new. The idea is based on the model of crowd-sourcing that has been around for a while. You could call Nextdrop a mix between Amazon Mechanical Turk, a crowd-sourcing Internet marketplace, and Next Bus, a popular Californian website that tells you when your next bus will arrive so you don't have to wait indefinitely," said Anu.

The idea has bagged several international cash awards from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Knight Foundation and Google, Clinton Global Initiative University, Centre For Information Technology Research, GSM Association Mwomen Programme, Global Social Venture Competition and Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition.

HDMC commissioner K V Trilokchandra said it is a value added service to which residents can enroll voluntarily.

As every tourist has become fed up with our State highway as they are not even bothered to take any alternate steps to fill the big 2 feet pot holes, as I have seen there were 5 trucks in different places meet with accident in different places

I am realy ashmed of the administration of state highway that they mantiane, once youe enter the Goa border you feel that you are in heaven on there roads.

As this road is a busy tourist movement road I feel petty on there journey on these roads, as to what they say of our country.

Twin cities may get water once in two days

Even as the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation decided in its general body meeting to supply water in the twin cities once in five days, preparations are on to ensure supply water once in two days.

As part of the Rs 210 crore Malaprabha Third Stage project, the new water filter station at Amminabhavi will be functional in April. Once the filter station is ready, it will be possible to store an additional 68 million litres of bulk water per day. Since there is no facility to store this water, it has to be supplied to the consumers once in two days.

The decision of HDMC to supply water once in five days had irked the people of Dharwad and Hubli. The people were upset that the water supply was being rationed when there was no shortage of water in Malaprabha reservoir and bulk water was not a problem.

What forced the HDMC was the lack of adequate internal distribution network within the twin cities. Deputy commissioner Darpan Jain told `The Times of India' that steps are being taken to set the internal water supply network right. The Tata Consultancy Services has already conducted a survey of the network and is expected to give a design soon.

"After the completion of the work on the third stage of the project, we are expecting to save Rs 30 crore out of the Rs 210 crore. By adding another Rs 60 crore to this, we can improve the internal supply network and ensure that at least 50% of the twin cities will get water daily," Jain said.

As part of the third stage project, additional pipeline with a diameter of 1,168 mm has been laid between Savadatti and Amminabhavi. Once the project is completed, it should take care of water requirements of the twin cities till 2026.

It is estimated that the per capita requirement is 135 litres per day. Considering that the population of Hubli-Dharwad will cross 20 lakh mark by 2041, it is estimated that the twin cities need 293 million litres of water per day. The project will ensure supply of drinking water not only to Hubli-Dharwad but also to Kundgol town and villages along the Savadatti- Dharwad stretch.

Just a few days to go for the railway budget. Kuldeep Chaturvedi, general manager, South Western Railway, speaks on people's demands.

What proposals has the South Western Railway sent to be included in the railway budget?

Whatever demands came forth from the people of Karnataka have been forwarded to the Railway board. The main demand is for trains to Delhi and Mumbai from Hubli, Gadag, Bijapur and other parts of the region. Another major demand is for an additional direct train to Bangalore and Rajasthan from Hubli.

Will these demands be met?

We are hoping that most of the demands will be included in the budget.

How many projects announced in the last budget have taken off?

The survey work of new lines announced in the last railway budget like Dharwad-Belgaum, Tumkur-Davanagere, Chikkabalapur-Puttaparthi, Shimoga-Harihar and Gadag-Haveri has been completed and the survey report sent to the Railway Board for further action.

HDMC conferred Best Practice Award

Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is perhaps the first corporation in the state to be appreciated by the state urban development department for adopting technology to provide hassle-free services to the public.

HDMC has been chosen for prestigious Best Practice Award-2010 under city corporations' category by Karnataka Urban Development Department (KUDD) in association with City Managers' Association-Karnataka ( CMAK) for its initiative in automized building plan approval system and implementation of volumetric tariff for water supply system.

HDMC is also said to have inspired other corporations in the state to adopt the services being offered by it __ to provide building plans and fixing volumetric water tariff.

According to a KUDD letter available with TOI, HDMC has been chosen for the coveted award "for revolutionizing the way of issuing building plans (building permission)" by adopting technology called Auto DCR software.

Earlier, people had to wait for over 21 days to get building permission. But after the implementation of the new system, people are getting building licence within a week.

The documents furnished by building owners will be loaded into the software. The applicants will be called for clarification, only if found to be violating the norms while constructing building. If not, the licence will be couriered to their address within seven days.

The government is also impressed with the way the corporation implemented the volumetric tariff for water supply in the twin cities. HDMC had earlier fixed flat prices as water tariff. But it has now joined hands with Water Board to introduce volumetric traffic.

Accordingly, the water tariff will be collected as per the consumption of water, instead of fixing uniform tariff to all consumers. If a person uses less water, (s)he will pay less amount.

Speaking to `The Times of India', HDMC commissioner K V Trilokchandra said: "We are happy that the government has recognized our works. The award has further increased our responsibility to deliver better services. We will strive to provide good services to the public."

From Sunday, jumping signals and breaking traffic rules will not be tolerated -- those violating the rules will have to pay a price.

The Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionarate has relied on the service of CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras to keep an eye on those who break the traffic rules. The department has installed six CCTVs in Hubli and three in Dharwad to regulate the traffic. The move follows the near-impossible task of the police to keep an eye on all the offenders, especially at the busy junctions.

The cameras have been installed at Sarvodaya Circle, Hosur Circle, Indi Pump Circle, Brindavan Circle, Bankapur Chowk and KC Circle (in Hubli), and Court Circle, Jubilee Circle and Toll Naka (in Dharwad). They will be functional from August 1.

The department has set up a traffic management centre at sub-urban police complex here to monitor the traffic while watching the camera feeds, round-the-clock. In case of violations or traffic jams, the staffers at the centre alert the traffic inspectors concerned. They, in turn, catch the errant motorist(s) or clear the traffic pile-up.
Speaking to `The Times of India', P R Batkurki, DCP (crime and traffic, Hubli-Dharwad) said: "We have installed the CCTV cameras at important road junctions to curb the violators and streamline the traffic."

Our main aim is to make people stick to traffic rules and to ensure smooth traffic movement, he added. The cameras will make motorists, even the reckless ones, fall in line, he hoped. "In case of violation, notice will be served to the errant driver/ rider who can be traced by his/ her vehicle registration number," he said.

What should be done to make the roads safer?

First thing is the unhealthy competition between NWKRTC and private buses should be stopped. They should understand that they are here to provide service to the people of hubli-dharwad not to compete with each other and make more profit. The NWKRTC buses time table between hubli-dharwad should be synchronized with private buses time table so that every bus will have its own schedule either private or departmental. Second thing is over taking between them should be totally prohibited. The bus which leaves early should reach early. There should not be any hurry in reaching destination. Speed lock should be placed for all the buses and most important thing is either government or private, all buses should be asked to stop only at the defined stops only. Not wherever they like and they should stop at all the mandatory stops. All bus stops should be made at the side of the road and buses should be parked at stops on the side road not on the main road blocking the actual path. Many accidents take place at bus stop only when the ongoing vehicle tries to overtake the standing bus. Scheduling of bus times should be fixed in such a way that it benefits the passengers and avoids the competition. Motorist should not over take these buses and actually over taking between hubli-dharwad roads should be totally prohibited for all vehicles. CC Camera should be used to monitor the traffic flow. Stray animals should not be allowed to wander on the roads. Every bus driver should report to controller about departure and arrival timing so that they are on schedule not before or after. And traffic law enforcement officers should punish even NWKRTC bus drivers also for violation of rules and action should be taken against them. Accident zones should be identified and more speed breakers should be installed. It is better to have road dividers between hubli-dharwad though it is single line in order to avoid overtaking and accidents.

The only solution to this problem is to have a BRTS ( Bus Rapid Transit system) in place, this will solve all the rash driving either by private operators or be it NWKRTC, this will not only discipline the drivers, it will also help commuters, this can easily be implemented in the 4 Lane Hubli Dharwad Project

Firsly, I wonder why permission has been given to a private company when the KSRTC is big enought o handle the city transportation . To eradicate the danger on the roads, The Police and the RTO must act tough on a few basic things

Provide certificates only after inspecting the buses

get a Warranty of Fitness certificate made mandatory to all the buses so that they comply with the basic requiremtns deemed fit to be on the road, Be it the lights, or the indicators. Most of the buses do not have the basic requirements

The police should make it a point that these buses do not over speed .

Make the private comapny pay parking fees when they park at the Bus Stops meant for KSRTC buses.

The private buses do not have drivers like the KSRTC, make it a compulsion that they are registered drivers with the RTO/Police

Just get the basics right and the roads will be a safer place.

Demand For A New Night Express Train Service From Hubli

Now that Bijapur/Sholapur Express Train is no longer Convenient to HD Citizens, due to change in timings and also Rani Chennamma Express, now caters to Citizens of Kolapur with more then 50 % of berths beings reduced, its better, they change this train name from Rani Chennamma Express to Shahu Maharaj express and start altogether a new Night Train Originating from Hubli and name it Rani Chennamma Express, the new Train can start from Hubli at 9.50 pm and reach Bangalore at 6 am, and with the same timing in the return direction. This is now need of the hour, Karnataka Chamber of Commerce should take the lead in this direction and get in touch with the Railway Authorities and demand for introduction of this new train.

If this was the situation in the north, all the trains services would have come to a halt, until their demands were met, not one politician has so far come out and demanded anything like this, they are all just keeping quite, as it does not effect them, since they either use flight to travel or use VIP quota in existing Rani Chennamma Express.

I would also like the media to take the lead in this direction, until the demands are met !!!

Hi The pathetic condition of residential areas under ISO 9001:2008 Certified HDMC jurisdiction with near by functioning zone in the area is a real matter of worry for any urbanite like all of us . Zones are adding financial burden to public exchequer by increasing expenditures several folds and decreasing services are seen.The One each offices in Hubli and Dharwad with 12 zones became total 14 offices in all and increased the higher expenses on higher side and lower quality services remained in the real picture. The same fate of the large number of residential areas coming under HDMC are under developed without proper verification and given completion certification , inspection reports by the authorities play a hand in glove by the team which inspects the area right under the nose of administrators such poorly built areas being handed over by developers to HDUDA and HDMC limit is putting actual financial burden on the civic body in years to come because the substandard works and under developed localities become a worry for the residents which lack of basic civic amenities and residents deprived of several civic services for years and situation worsens as time passes because of negligence of the authorities that is going to remain in times to come Hope Navanagar gets them early with time.

We all know how badly the NWKSRTC is being run. People with no knowledge become the Chairman or they get some post through the political weight.

They should take some clue from the different methods of transportation from different countries. A ticket wending machine should be installed at the entrance of the door. There should be one entry level and one exit. Make it a fool proof system. It needs a lot of thinking and planning, but its a pity that none match the IAS officers level of thinking.

Let the officers with IAS or any such ranking be made the Chairman of such institutions rather than making someone a scape goat as he/she would not know the how abouts of taking care of such a vast institution like the NWKSRTC. This will automatically get rid of any kind of controversies, once a IAS ranked person is given the responsibility then there would be very few instances of either the ruling party or the opposition to blame any one. It will be the responsibility of the IAS officer to take care of the Institution like NWKSRTC

To improve the facilities, the govt should Get new buses, get more of advertisement endorsed on the buses so that it helps in getting extra revenue.

Firstly they need to shun those coffins on wheels, they are the most unsafe buses running around and also they are not cost effective, without any passenger comforts, Install DVR camera's in the bus to record the passengers traveling, this will avoid NWKRTC being taken for a ride by some conductors pocketing the money and also this will help investigate in case of any crime. I had approached NWKRTC offering bus design services in improving Safety and Comfort for all their existing models. Many people get killed in accidents and I have never seen anybody or any authority in India pointing fingers towards poor design these buses are built as for as Safety is concerned, compared to developed world! When it comes to comfort, compared to passenger cars, anybody can questions why these buses cannot have all those comforts (reduced Noise, Vibration & Harshness - NVH, etc)?! I saw the following news article today in TOI, I wonder if the Health Officer has ever checked if the water supplied by Water Board is getting chlorinated , as I never smell the water of chlorine when supplied, this chlorination of water is very important during the rainy season, Chlorine is a highly efficient disinfectant which kills disease-causing bacteria in the water. Poor people cannot afford to boil water or have filter at home, chlorination is a basic thing which water board has to do and its the duty of the health officer to see that it is implemented - Sunil Nalavade

Hubble-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has requested the public and hoteliers to take precautionary measures to contain the spread of gastroenteritis (GE) in the twin cities.

In a release, HDMC health officer Dr Prabhu Biradar has asked people to drink boiled water or use filters to purify water and keep the water-borne disease at bay. Besides asking the public to demand boiled water at hotels, the officer advised them not to eat fruits and food sold at roadside shops. The release also directed the public not to eat stale food, especially if it is non-vegetarian.

Just take your necessary original documents, you can photocopy there itself their required documents @ Charge of Re1/per copy , no need to take any photographs, as they will take ur photograph there itself.

This is a real boon to HD and North Karnataka Citizens, getting passport was never so easy.

Prepaid Auto Service Discontinued

Yesterday I visited Railway Station and to my surprise the Prepaid Auto Service has been discontinued, this is a sad state of affairs, I think it was the railways who were looking after this service, it was raining very heavily and the passengers were being fleeced to the core by the auto drivers with no sight of any Traffic Police around.

I hope the Railways and police dept restores this service ASAP

After finding its way into the Limca Book of Records for being the first road in the country to be insured by the citizens, the Timmasagar Temple Main Road in Hubli has added another feather to its cap. It has now entered India Book of Records.

The 385-metre civic road that connects NH-4 shot into fame after a local medical practitioner Dr Mrityunjay C Sindhur insured it for an amount of Rs 2 lakh in August 2007. While Sindhur himself paid the annual premium for the first two years, a group of nine citizens located on the pathway joined him in sharing the premium amount of the third year for an assured sum of Rs 6 lakh.

Sindhur said henceforth the same procedure will be followed to pay the premium. He said that many residents were individually ready to bear the whole insurance premium. "But later, it was decided to distribute the responsibility as it would help spread a strong message about private participation. It will also make the residents treat the road as theirs," he said. This initiative entered Limca Book of records in 2007.

He said the residents' initiative, however small, helps protect the public road. "But it will go a long way in inculcating civic sense among the residents and help reduce some part of financial burden on the government..." he added.

The residents here also want people elsewhere in the city to take a cue from them. "We hope that the HDMC will make efforts in this regard for the well-being of its roads which will save lot of funds. Recognitions such as this (India Book of Records or Limca Book of Records) should encourage people's participation in public work," he said.

"For me it has become a movement and I want this message to go everywhere. All corporations must follow this to save crores on road repairs," Sindhur said, adding the methodology is simple consisting of the insurance company inspecting the quality of the road before signing of papers and the claims going directly to the civic bodies. He has also started a blog www.insuredroad.blogspot.com to propagate the movement.

Politicians from Tamilnadu are not only opposing Hindi, they also don't want to be part of India, DMK's main agenda way back in 1962 was seeking independence from India, which won them 50 state legislature seats, this led to passing of the law banning any party or individual voicing "secession from India" (that is, independence from India) from contesting in elections. Immediately, the DMK dropped its independence demand and started anti Hindi propaganda, and started opposing Hindi language in the state, which has led to almost 90 % of Tamilians do not know Hindi and due to cross border migration, today Bangalore our Capitol City, people speak more Tamil than Kannada, as they do not understand Hindi or Kannada and we in order to survive with them, have to learn Tamil in Bangalore, I wont be surprised in a few years, preference will be given to those who can speak Tamil in Bangalore to get jobs, the bottom line is, we need to have one common language for all Indians to communicate, and unless you impose a certain national language in all the states this cannot be achieved, I think learning additional language will help that individual in practical life more then learning other subjects at basic level !!!

I am a tamilian. Hindi was/is not taught in my school. But when I stepped out of Tamil nadu, I felt like a fish out of water. Though I know English, no one is preferring to speak English in North India.

Either Tamil nadu should secede from India or accept Hindi. But it is not doing both. The life of Tamilians outside Tamil nadu becomes very difficult. But Tamil politicians never realise this.

Even Andhra, Karnataka whose mother toungue is not Hindi have Hindi in their schools. So what is stupid ego problem for Tamil nadu. I am a tamilian but I dont like this ego thing.

Has Telugu, kannada perished due to the hindi education? No. So why Tamilnadu is fearing?

There is nothing wrong in teaching a language that is spoken by majority of people min the country. Even for those who dont step out of Tamilnadu, learning a new language is not going to harm.

Around 15 years ago when I was travelling frequently to Bangalore, all my friends from
North Karnataka who were working there, use to complain about the Tamilian's domination

At that time no body can impose anything on anyone. For example I studied Hindi only at 6th and 7th stds. From 8th onwards there is no compulsion that one should study Hindi. I feel if one knows more languages then definitely he feels happy. Â One more thing nobody forces anyone to learn anything. If such a 100% compulsion was there by this time whole India would have been literate. Now a days even if the child does anything in the school the teacher is not suppose to punish him you know. I mean to say there is compulsion on anything.Â

Sliver of hope for Hubli-Ankola rail project

The environment and forests ministry has decided to review the revised proposal submitted by the Railways for the Hubli-Ankola broad gauge rail line project. The decision has given the jinxed project a fresh lease of life.

The revised proposal submitted by the railway ministry has reduced the forest land required by it for the project in the fragile ecosystem of Western Ghats.

The Rs 1,050-crore project is designed to connect North Karnataka hinterland with the coastal region for access to the Karwar port. Work on the project was stalled after it was denied environmental clearance in 2004.

Dharwad MP Prahlad Joshi who has taken up the issue with the Centre said the decision to take a relook at the proposal was a welcome step and hoped the inspection to yield favourable results for Karnataka. The revised proposal has cut the requirement of forest land from 965 hectares to 727 hectares. But it requires the felling of 265,120 trees in the fragile ecosystem of Western Ghats as the proposed railway alignment fragmented the traditional elephant migration corridor and catchments of the Kali, Bedthi and Gangavali rivers.

The Hubli-Ankola rail line project, considered crucial for economic development of the region, was taken up in 2003. It is a 50:50 joint venture between the railway ministry and Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprise (KRIDE), a special-purpose vehicle created for expansion of the rail network in the state.

The South Western Railway had begun laying the track in the non-forest area from Hubli to Kalghatgi pending clearance from the environment department, which was denied in June 2004 following adverse remarks of the forest advisory committee.

Even as the Central Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court was still examining the matter in its totality, the state forest department developed cold feet. In March 2008, it recommended to the government that the Kalghatgi-Ankola portion of the line "be dropped once for all" as it will serve no purpose.

However, senior SWR officials maintain that the project was still viable. "The revised alignment takes care of the environmental concerns as we have introduced elevated rail tracks across the traditional elephant migration corridors and at spots near the watering holes of wild animals in the Western Ghats section of the line," an official said.

The Central Empowered Committee had advised the railway ministry in September 2006 to stop work on the 40-km Hubli-Kalghatgi stretch even in the non-forest areas till the matter was examined in its entirety. Meanwhile, the railway ministry and the state government were asked to revise the project proposal.

One held for ATM fraud, cash, car recovered

The local police on Saturday arrested one for ATM fraud and recovered Rs 11.3 lakh, several ATM and debit cards and a car from him. Police

said the accused Rajendrakumar Kulkarni, a resident of Navanagar here, used to misguide people at ATMs to achieve his goal.

Explaining his modus operandi, police said Kulkarni used to select places where two or more ATM machines are located and wait for gullible people. Once the customer entered the PIN number after swiping the card, he asked him to try on another machine saying the one he/she was using is under repair. Then he checked the balance and then cleared it.

According to the information available with the police so far, Kulkarni has cheated at least six people in Hubli-Dharwad including Shivappa Pattanashetty, a senior citizen, and one in Upparpet, Bangalore. Pattanashetty had lodged a police complaint leading to his arrest.

Kulkarni was arrested on Saturday morning after a security guard at an ATM in Dammanagi Plaza here alerted police after he grew suspicious about Kulkarni's movements.

Today all of a sudden Keswapur Market was closed by HDMC and an alternate place in Chetna Colony was provided, this alternate place without making proper arrangement, was suddenly shifted, this place has Black soil and with yesterday's rain, it was horrible for both vendors and customers, with no proper parking area and it chaos around, I spoke to HDMC A/C of Zone 6, who was there, told him he should have done proper arrangement, before shifting, he said they are the market place they are developing near Shanti Nagar, they could have waited till the new one was in place, I hope HDMC will develop a proper market like Raitera Sante in cotton market. The same has ample parking and is going waste, as the same is allotted only to farmers, surprisingly there is only one farmer selling apples, I wonder where he growing the same in Dharwad District !!!

Fencing of Railway Tracks around Hubli Dharwad

Fencing of Railway Tracks around Hubli Dharwad has to be taken up immediately as there are lots of accidents taking place, only recently I think 3 deaths have taken place on the railway tracks, also I have seen, School children walking on these tracks, especially behind Pillai School. This is a matter of serious concern and it is also the responsibility of the Railways to safe guard the safety of the Citizens.

Further as far as I remember some 5 lakhs Chq was given to the railways for an over head bridge construction, wonder what happened to that.

Separate state of Telangana

Now that there is going to be separate state of Telangana, Gorkhaland and Utarkand have started their claim, I wonder when North Karnataka is going to stake that claim, the root cause for all this is treatment given to the districts by the respective state ruling powers, showing their step motherly treatment to some districts of their state, I think the center should have watch dog committee and to look into the effected districts to avoid such divisions.

Below 20 micron plastic bags banned in twin cities

In a major step towards tackling the plastic menace, Dharwad DC Darpan Jain has issued a circular, banning the sale/ usage of plastic bags

below the thickness of 20 microns in the district.

S K Kolhar, executive engineer (solid waste management) of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, said the ban is intended to check the increased incidents of choked drains and burning of plastic, especially in twin cities, and check indiscriminate use of plastic as it poses a serious health hazard and pollute the environment.

Sources said the ban was imperative in the absence of proper solid waste management system in the twin cities, in spite of their generating around 400 tonnes of waste on a daily basis. Of this, about 80 tonnes is non-biodegradable. However, the circular is silent on plastic recycling units operating in the district.

Separate committees have been formed at corporation and taluk levels to monitor the ban. While HDMC commissioner will head the corporation committee, the respective tahsildars will head the taluk-level ones. Deputy director of food and civil supplies department, HDMC health officer and officials of weights and measures, pollution control board and police departments will be the members of the committees.

The members of the committee will pay surprise visits to shops and other business establishments for inspection. Action will be initiated against those flouting the rules.

Kolhar said an action plan is being readied to successfully implement the ban through awareness programmes and putting up signboards at different places. Self-help groups have come forward to help shopkeepers with sufficient supply of paper bags, he added.

I was travelling from Mumbai to Hubli On 18th Nov and had booked on Corona A/C Sleeper Coach, I had made online booking, so I had no problem, The bus was delayed for about an hour in Kalamboli as family of 2 + 2 Children had booked 3 Tickets as per the suggestion of the agent who charged them Rs.3000/- Rs.1000/- per Ticket and he had told him 3 tickets were enough for 2+2 family, but when they boarded the Bus, the Conductor did not allow this, he said they must buy another ticket, they had big argument and finally that poor guy had to shell out another Rs.400/-

Other passengers also informed that they had been charges Rs.1000/- per seat.

As far as the bus is concerned, It was Dirty and full of Cockroaches, and they gave water bottle only to those who asked for it. Also at vashi they filled the luggage area with junk computers , there was no space for passengers to keep the luggage, they were asked to take them inside.

01. Please extend this train to Belgaum instead of Bijapur, with convenient timing. Say reach Belgaum before 8.00

02. It could have better timing than RC Express. Many people do not prefer train to Bangalore just for the reason that, it reaches Bangalore Late.

You can see many people travel by Bus as RC Express is always wait listed.

the train was seasonal and hence needs to renewed once in six months

The newly constructed concrete bed which collect water flowing from SRINAGAR and surronding area which make UNKAL LAKE look beautiful. Lakhs of RUPEES have spent for fencing, gutter, footpath around Unkal lake etc etc.

NOW it is raining WATER is STANDING in the NEWLY constructed GUTTER besides to Garden (Opp to Srinagar bus stop and till Sutiria motors). It is NOT flowing into the UNKAL LAKE. Marsh is grown water is stagnent. FOUL smell blows to the passers by on the road. Any body can OMIT in the bus/vechile they travel. Standing water lead to mosquito breeding spot causing water born diseases.

Can this be cleaned ??? WE are apreaciating at ONE work done by HDMC is not enough. There are yen number of issues were in HDMC is laging behind...... .. Wat are the new development taken up....

Today I visited the spot along with the concerned Health Inspector & Zonal Asst. Commissioner. The Drain cleaning work has been started and it has been instructed to gear up the work until everything should be cleared. And this is the problem which will arise in rainy season every year.Because My Findings 1) this drain infront of your shop intakes the storm water from the localities like Raj Nagar, Gurudev Nagar, Chamundeswari nagar, NCC ground, Lokappan Hakkal, Shantinagar South to Vidyanagar Main Road, Beside KMC, Jabin College to Karnataka Bhavan.2)The drain infront of Akalwadi Complex is of approx 6' height and the cellar shops are in depth of same variably 6" to 1.5' and to drain the rain water from complex the provision has been made infront of your shop is variably same to the bottom of the drain level.3)When heavy rain showers the main drain will flows at approx 4' in height and this water does not intake the water from the complex instead of that it enters into complex and causes flooding and damages in the complex as it was happened during last year.(Photos enclosed)This is not the only problem with your complex ,there are many other buildings with similar complaints.4)My suggestion a)First to close the outlet of the complex, b)Build the sump(tank) to the little more capacity of the storm water accumulates in the building, c)then pump the stored water into the drain (Before this consult with the Civil Engineer who may suggest for better solutions).

Hello Mr.Desai,

Is there something we all can do and get this to Hubli-dharwad-belgaum area, I mean make a case with some good reasons as to why we want IIT in our area rather than bangalore and give it to somebody who can really do something?

I am asking this as I am from Hubli but never lived there (after school) and only my parents live there and I do not have much idea as to how politics works there in india and who can help use better. I really think we should get IIT in our area as bangalore is not the only city in karnataka. (I actually wrote to PM's office also but no response).

So please write back (for that matter anybody can write back from hubli group) and lets work towards getting IIT for our area and we deserve it (not just pay tax and let bangalore spend it).

My opinion is it has to come to North Karnataka region and we should not differentiate between Hubli Dharwar Belgaum..

I suggest let the IIT be established between Hubli and Belgaum, may be somewhere near Kittur (which is half way) and the extent of land needed for IIT will also be available. With the 4 lane road connectivity, it is about 45 mins drive either side..
For this both Belgaum politicians and Hubli-Dharwar politicians can pressure in a better way than divided!

we the people of HUBLI-DHARWAD welcome new commissioner.

there are no much challenges for commissioner in hubli- dharwad rather than maintaining the existing law and order. we are quiet citizens, and there are absolutely no issues in this area which can be considered as challenging. yes these is scope for improvement within the department and as well as outside the department. let the police department become more people friendly department and let us hope people's problems are addressed in systematic order. police department should think of having a customer care type centre where people feel more comfortable than going to the police station.

the new commissioner has more challenging job within the department to improve it rather than the social problems. like other big cities neither we have terrorists issue nor naxals issue, even politically also it is dead city and rowdyism is hardly on the surface and can be eradicated easily. so i feel new commissioner should concentrate in developing the system within the department which should be very effective. and it is the system which should be functioning not the people. people should just follow the systems. let us hope police department becomes system driven organisation rather than people or politicians driven company.

let us wish all the best to the new commissioner and give him breathing space to implement his ideas

first thing is political functions should be allowed inside the city limit at all and if allowed authorities should take care proper traffic movement. they spend lakhs of tax payers money for political scores and that should be challenged in the court.

second if the public function is inevitable then VIPs should be treated like normal people when it comes to manage the traffic and their vehicles should also pass thru' the same traffic without stopping other people. chopper service is totally ruled out for these VIPs in such small city like hubli and as hublian I wish not to have any public function within the city limit.

third point is people should boycott such functions inside the city limit and this will definitely alarms the organisers and politicians. if involvement people in such function reduces then automatically politicians are forced to change their decisions.

It is pretty unfair that they being elected representative and holding high ranks are flouting rules. They are making a mockery of the rule and laws. They should abide by the laws of the land.

Further, the main reason for we members to contact you is about IIT for North Karnataka, Center has agreed an IIT for Karnataka finally and as per The human resource development ministry which had set up a committee headed by space scientist Dr. U.R. Rao in 1996, This committee after visiting all IIT's to study the infrastructure available, the committee recommended establishment of three new IIT's in the country.
& Dharwad in Karnataka was one of the places that had been identified by the committee.

Now we have been seeing media reports that the GOK has finalized the IIT location in Bangalore, which is completely against the committee's recommendations and you being from Hubli-Dharwad and Honorable Speaker Mr. Jagadish Shettar should take up this matter with the CM and see that it comes back to North Karnataka as recommended by the committee.

Govt need to have proper power management, Many captive power plants in the State are not running at full capacity.

State Electricity boards can procure good quality CFL lamps and supply them to all consumers to replace incandescent lamps as done in Andhra Pradesh and else ware at the price of Rs.15 each. Each CFL consumes only about a quarter of the energy required by an incandescent lamp to produce the same light and lasts much longer. If all incandescent lamps are replaced by CFL lamps, the State's peak demand will fall by about 600 MW and more than 100 MU per month can be saved. One CFL lamp can save more than Rs. 300 per year in electricity usage.

Large scale use of solar energy for water heating in residences, hospitals, hotels etc. should be encouraged with the help of limited period subsidies and loans. If all AEH installations switch to solar water heating then lots of power can be saved.

Industry working hours in different parts of the State can be staggered to reduce peak hour demand.

All Corporation Street Lights should be installed with Automatic Timers, so that the street lights can be switched on and switched off at pre determined timings and save lot of power due to street lights burning during daylight.

Well, be it Summer or any other season, Water is the basic and utter most requirement for any living being. What comes to my head is the Politicians who have promised a 24x7 water supply for our twin cities, the promise is all over the papers, and now there comes a statement that the promise has to be looked into again. If not 24x7, let them make it a point that there is a certain time table made, and water is supplied ward wise and on specific timings, but that doesnt happen over here. Water is wasted in so many places, there are broken taps, pipes, and no one is looking into these small matters. Why doesnt the HDMC come up with a intiative of granting permision for digging up a borewell. There are borewells which are dug up just next to another building which already has a borewell installed. We are digging the earth and digging our own graveyard. HDMC should take some information from the Bharath Water Foundatin and look up into water conservation and harvesting of rain water. Or one fine day, it will be a case of finding an oasis in the land of desert.

Today I visited HDOne at glass house at 9 am, there where only 6 people in front of me and it took 30 minutes for my turn to come up, there where 5 officers, 2 officers to receive the forms and two + 1 to help give the details + forms, all 3 where attending 1 single guy. I wish they had opened 4 counters as follows:

1 = To give Forms

2= To submit Forms

3 & 4 = to give the details enetered in their list

This will be more faster and less time consuming.

Welcome to India...

This is nothing compare to what i went through.

My passport was still active and i was running out of the pages in my passport. I went to passport office in Bangalore to get additional passport booklet. You know, inspite of having the active passport with valid saudi visa on it, what did the passport officer asked me? He wanted my address proof. Well i was well prepared for this. I was carrying ration card, my bank statement for current month and voter ID.

Now you must be thinking khadri is very smart. Not true, because the officer was either smarter than me or had made up his mind to not to issue me the additional booklet. You know after checking all my documents, he rejected my application saying that i will have to bring the affidivate from Hubli Notary confirming my address proof.

I felt very proud to be Indian at that moment of time, as our govt official are so much perticular about the paper work........

So finaly i felt this is mission impossible, and then i decided to take up this task in Saudi arabia.

When i came to Saudi arabia, i walked into Indian Embasy and applied for the additional booklet. The only thing i had to do was to fill up the application form and paste two photographs, and within four working days i recieved my Jumbo Passport with expiry date extended for next ten years.

The conclusion of this to me is,

We Indians are given more respect in any other country than in our own country.

Now i strongly agree with the above statement of mine when i came across one more incident yesterday when i was travelling to saudi arabia by gulf air.

There was a big line for boarding the flight from Mumbai. Most of them in the line are indians except four foreingers( Two from saudi and two from Netherland), we all were patiently waiting in the Que to board the flight, and all of a sudden what i see is our indian brother, the staff of gulf air, comes to these foreigners asking them to bypass the Que and board the flight directly, may be he felt bad to see the white skin guys waiting in the labour class black indians....Is it in our blood that we Indians always salut the White skin people. When will we come out of this white skin fobia and respect ourselves.

The only thing i could do was to fight back to the Gulf air officer asking him why he had to pull off this foreinger from the Que.

Dear Indian, Specially in the Big post ( Managers and executive)

Kindly wake up and treat our Indian brothers with same pride and stop shaking head and telling Sir to all these white skin people....

So guys better you take as much proofs as possible, otherwise they will make you go back and get some more and coming all the way back from Navanagar to Hubli or Dharwad is not easy.

(a) Proof of address (attach one of the following):

Applicant's ration card, certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head, water /telephone /electricity bill/statement of running bank account/Income Tax Assessment Order /Election Commission ID card, Gas connection Bill, Spouse's passport copy, parent's passport copy in case of minors. (NOTE: If any applicant submits only ration card as proof of address, it should be accompanied by one more proof of address out of the above categories).

But all said and done, if you dont have your Voter ID card Number, then its like finding a needle in a haystack

I totaly agree with Sunil. I have been struggling to get my voter ID for years, as each time these cards are issued in our locality, i am either out of country or unware of it.

Same is the case with the ration cards. Are our politicians, govt officials so bussy that they do not have time to come out of their offices/houses to come out and monitor how the process of issuing the ration cards going on.

Just imagine what will be image of our country (so called developing, IT center) when the whole world see a kilometer line of dirty cloth, hungary, poor people waiting in big que just to get an application form of ration card. This was always been my arguement with my scotish friend Steve, that he always use to tease me on how long and big Q's where you go in india. I always was arguing with him that it was in olden days not any more. But he is right. We still have the same Q's everywhere.

The process of issuing the ration cards could have been made easy by giving the forms in all the public offices like post office, govt schools etc.

Voter ID Card must be issued through out the year, just like the passport is done, now Voter ID card has become an important ID card, and issuing this just for a few days in a year for a population of our country is not sufficient, I hope the election commission can have atleast one office at district head quarters open through out the year and also they should implement online facility for applying the voter id Cards.

I was quite perplexed to receive a mail addressed to all singing songs in praise of Mr. Ramalinga Raju.

Please bear in mind that Mr Ramalinga Raju was one of our IT icons.

But subsequently according to his own confession he began cooking books for SEVEN LONG YEARS!

This is unacceptable by any standards- IT corporate ethical standards.

It seems so naive and funny when his employees and other IT experts praise his confession!

Please note that he has confessed so that he can be booked in India and save his skin from the US law enfforcers. Now that he has hired a battery of 25 lawyers- it is a clear indication that he wants to escape with minimal punishment.

NO I am not saying that the politicans should be praised for all the worng doings that they engage in.

But just because some of our politicans are criminals and act that way, they cannot be praised. Same way if some IT Industrialist do gross wrong after being so much more educated than the politicians, we cannot spare him. Mr. Ramalinga Raju sadly so - will pay his price and he will go down in history as a cheat- whatever we all try and do. Wish others who make similar mistakes correct at the earliest.

but i must say that the present corporation authorities are the worst we ever had and they are least bothered about the real growth of twin city. we want to make it IT HUB , we want high court bench here...( we have already ) we want this , we want that .......we want so many things but don't we want a competitive authority to govern us ? what infrastructure we are providing to the people who want to invest here.............

our emphasis so far has been ONLY IT........now IT has gone to dogs...........deservingly.

people had forgotten that IT is tool for mechanical, electrical, chemial and other engeering projects and industries...........they were always over valued and correction in that sector is very right.............................

now coming to the core issue. what traffic measures our authorities are taking to prevent the accidents at least in chennamma circle.?

we have been telling this to the authorities from the group but nothing materialised. the authorities are basically not interested in development at all. one FLY OVER CAN SOLVE many problems. no doubt hubli needs at least 3 fly overs but let us start with one first.

first time hubli felt the heat of development during the manivannan's era........it was he who introduced us what better changes can be done in hubli if authorities are willing to do so. he showed us how good roads look like. he broght the concept of road medians to hubli. if he would have not done that may be today we would have not demanded the development of twin city at all. we would have lived like we did before 10 years........same ghatara.....chakkadi in the middle of durgadbail...........danada salu right in the middle of koppikar road.,..........is not it?

now that we know what is real development of twin and we are demanding it........but unfortunately every authority can't be so aggressive as manivannan but they can really carry forward the good work done in the past.

we the people of hubli dharwad interested in the growth of the city not in any individual. one who does, we appreciate and one who does not do ,we demand for it.............we want growth of the city.........................

I think it is time we seriously think of fly over at chennamma circle and i want other members to raise their concern in this regard and let us hope for positive response from the authorities.

Its High time that NWKRTC scrapped these Junk Coffins on wheels, these are all outdated buses with high fuel consumption and high cost to maintain and most of the time these buses have break downs, causing fatal accidents, traffic jams, some of these buses are in such a bad shape the passengers bear the rough and tumble of this rickety machine that threatens to fall apart any minute. I wonder how RTO allows these coffins to run around the city.

I think Hubli-Dharwad Citizens needs better commuting facilities and NWKRTC should scrap these coffins on Wheels and acquire new fuel efficient buses and since now most of the roads in Hubli-Dharwad is now congested, they should deploy more of these Eicher Motors mini red buses, which are much better in comfort and do not take much space on the roads.

On 27th & 28th Sept 08, Our group conducted Workshop on Traffic Wardens for 32 BVB College students, Thanks to Prof Manteshswamy's initiative, who had submitted the list of students, who were willing to become Traffic Wardens to The Police Commissioner Mr. Shivakumar during our last visit to his office. We Thank Mr. Sivakumar - Police Commissioner for sending his team to BVB College.

Mr.S.L.Shivali ( Senior LIC Agent ) & Mr.A.M. Dakappa ( Service Engg for E electrical Appliances) - Traffic warden since last 12 years, explained in detail about TWO ( Traffic Warden Organization ), which was established in 1985 in Bangalore, he said that Traffic Warden's duty is purly on voluntary basis and one should not expect any monetary gains, and TW's do not have any powers, they are here to help the Traffic Police Dept, whenever the need arises for example during festivals, special functions, their main job is to create awareness to the public for using the footpath & assist the traffic police during peak hours for 2 to 3 hrs per week..

Mr. Ratan Kumar -SI & Police constable explained various signals & traffic signs & Traffic Rules & regulations.

Mr. P.S.Angadi - CPI, Mr.S.N.Balikai coordinated works for Police Dept. under the instruction from the Police Commissioner, Mr. Chavan ACP Planned & Executed the awareness programme.

I would like to Thank Prof Mantesswamy, Mr. Shivakumar - Police Commissioner and the team for successful execution of the Traffic Warden Programme.

i regret to inform u that the service ( installation part ) of BIG TV is very poor. i know u r the distributor and have nothing to do with installation process but still i think u should pressurize reliance installation team. dealers are facing lot of problem due to this and they are the one who have to face the customer face to face. though their and your responsibility ends once u sell the box to them but the purpose of selling these boxes will be served only if they are installed.
the major problems are as below.

installation is getting delayed. not even as per the promise done by the call center.
half installation done in many cases and they do not come back for completion despite of calling them many times.
your installation in charge does not takes any calls at all.
installation done in some cases and activation is not done. they say things will be alright in half an hour but nothing is materialized for days.
in some cases, they come with antenna (umbrella ) and other cable equipments and they say they will come back and they have not come back at all.
BIG TV call center does not has any idea of what is happening on field and they are not aware of ground realities and i think every the top management reliance is also not aware of the ground realities.

the problems are even more but everything can't be explained to u. one thing please understand if u don't improve your installation service then it would be very difficult for marketing reliance BIG TV.
and some customer are so annoyed that , they make take the issue to press also.........bad press will definitely hurt the image of your business...
so i request you to please forward this mail to the concerned officer and try to get the things done in time. or stop selling boxes and get the sold boxes installed first..................................

Giving out yet another positive signal that they may zero in on Karnataka for the Nano project in case they decide to relocate from Singur in West Bengal, a Tata Motors delegation visited two locations near Dharwad, proposed by the industries department.
   In the wake of an assurance by the state government that it was ready to offer the company 1,000 acres for the small car project, the Tata Motors team led by managing director G Ravi Kanth visited Gamanagatti and Tarihal last week. It is 7-8 km from Telco in Dharwad city, where the company has another plant.
   "The state government is confident that Tatas will choose Dharwad as their destination to set up Nano plant in case they decide to relocate from Singur. As a good sign towards that, our officials along with the delegation have done a field visit last week,'' large and medium industries minister Murugesh R Nirani told reporters here on Monday.
   Stating that everything was moving in a positive direction, the minister said he has sought an appointment with Tata group chairman Ratan Tata. The Tata Motors delegation met chief minister B S Yeddyurappa last week and sent clear signals to the West Bengal government that they are not averse to pulling out from Singur if the land transfer row is not resolved.
   After the assurance that they would get 1,000 acres in Dharwad, Tatas had told the government that they will respond in a fortnight.
   Karnataka has already allotted nearly 900 acres of land in Dharwad for Tata Motors where luxury buses, their components, light commercial vehicles and vans will be manufactured.

We are talking of planting trees etc, I think we should first protect the existing trees here, take an example of my Colony Chanakya Puri, some residents just cut the trees for Vastu purpose or just because the leaves fall in their garden, and these trees are not their property, these are on the Govt Roads, you can see the below the picture, while they were carrying out, I went and requested the resident not to cut this tree as it has taken 30 years to grow and we are lucky to have this and it's the environment looks so beautiful, I told him, you may just cut the branch that is coming into your compound, he agreed and yesterday when I went near his house, its gone !!!

I cannot complain directly as we are all neighbors, and this tree is front of police quarters, none of them stopped it, next day the corporation has to clean up the mess on the road after cutting the tree, they did not report or take action.

There should be ammoniums reporting of such matter to the forest dept, but they have no such system, if we have any members on this group who have contacts with the concerned authorities, pl do take it up, to have such a system and save our trees.

Karnataka offers land for Nano, peace of mind

The Karnataka Government has offered 1000 acres for the Nano car project and "incentives", Tata Motors Managing Director Ravi Kant said on Thursday.

Kant announced this after meeting Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yedyurappa in Bangalore on Thursday morning. The Karnataka government has offered land for the Nano factory in the north Karnataka district of Dharwad.

The Tata group already has a 800-acre manufacturing unit at Belur on the outskirts of Dharwad city where it makes the low-floor Marco Polo buses.

The twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad have an all-season airport, which has direct flights to Bangalore and Mumbai and they are near ports. There are at least 20 engineering colleges in and around Dharwad.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, Yedyurappa said Tata Motors were "very receptive" to his suggestion that they manufacture then Nano in Dharwad. "I told Tatas to come to Dharwad. Hopefully they will take a decision in two months," he said.

Yedyurappa said he had promised the company there would be no dharnas or violent protests against them, as the state's people want an industrial revolution.

The company was to set up a factory to manufacture the Nano in Singur, West Bengal, but suspended work at the plant on September 2 saying it feared the security of its employees who were manhandled and threatened by protesters opposed to 'forcible acquisition of farmland' for the project.

The talks between the Karnataka government and Tata Motors were held after the West Bengal government clearly told Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday that it cannot give more land from the factory area to farmers.

Mamata has threatened a fresh agitation if the government does not agree to return the 300 acres inside the Nano plant. The Bengal government says it can allot 70 acres.

Mamata is expected to announce her future course of action after meeting West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi on Friday.

Kant said, "We have not taken any decision (on relocating from Singur). We will consult our chairman Ratan Tata."

Am not against biharis or anybody for that matter. Am only against the injustice meeted out to our people in railway recruitments. Have you forogotten what happened last year when railway group D exams were held?

Can somebody answer me?
1> Why the Group D employees selection ad had not come in local news papers in my state Karnataka??

Laloo wanted to give as many jobs to biharis as much possible before the next genaral elections so that those who got the benefit will vote for him until their last breath.

The greats of hubli region Paapu, Sankeshwar have all faught for the railway zone for so long. I am sure, this is not what they had in their mind in all those years of struggle for the zone.

Aren't there lakhs of poor people in Karnataka with at least an 8th grade education who would qualify for these jobs? If the reports are true, it is alarming to learn that locals constitute less than 10% of the group D workers in SWR today. Shame on media elites and politicians who don't understand the plight of poor Kannadigas.

We are not asking for 100% of the jobs but a fair share of the jobs. There should be a central law that mandates 80% of the vacancies be filled by the locals in C and D categories.

Same thing used to happen to Karnataka candidates when the railway operations in the state were split between SCR and SR. They were filled with TN and AP candidates. Now it is Biharis in SWR.

Also , Why kannadigas are accepting India as their country? Why tamils are in India? Why any part of this country (?) wishes to be in India?
Logically… it is for the progress, security etc … of that region. If you are denied your right of employment, If you are made to live as a second grade citizen, If your natural resources are taken away for the price of a penny…. would you still like to be in india?
Any Indian can go & stay in any part of this country.. waaw sounds great. Do you know that if a hindi speaking person comes to a remote village of karnaataka/ tamilnadu and demands communication in Hindi in your post office… you can not refuse reply in Hindi. This is what "Indian official languages act" says.

Why do we want any project in our place? It is to provide employment to our people. Is it not? What is the meaning of development,then?industrialisation without providing job to the people of this land means exploitation of the resourses of our place. Am I right?

Come on! Is this country built in such a wrong way that people have to become nomads to lead their lives? Dont we have self-sufficiency in each of our states so that people from Assam dont have to migrate to Karnataka to guard someone's properties? Is it so bad in Bihar that people from there have to come here plumb water lines in homes 5000kms away from his home? We do have people in us who can do all this, dont we? There are people in Assam who need guards too; people in Bihar need plumbing too!

I disagree with the openion of Mr.Vasant.

What are we fighting here for. Dont you think that we already have lot of such problems in our state to handle, why are we forcing ourself to get into regional issues now. I do not think this will do any good for development of our city. Look at what is happening in Mumbai. Think as a common man and give your honest openion about what is happning out their is good or bad.

Lets not divert our visions towards unwanted disputes which leads to nothing else than spoiling the name of our state/city. If maharastrians think that speaking Marathi alone makes them proud, lets prove to the world that how broad minded we HD people are and how big our heart is, that we welcome any relegion, any caste and any regional persone to come to our city for the search of bread and for better living.

Just think of the house rents in HD. Who you think are the highest rent payers in HD? I am sure north indians are the one. Who pays the highest donations for our colleges, ofcourse they are north indians.

When we are getting so much of benifits then why stop them?

If you realy like to stop the entery of other state people in our cities, then you better think of stopping them in all respect.

Dont you think that, one of the reasone why bengulur has grown so fast is because of involvement of other state peoples?

If these people get some benifit out of our cities for puting up their energy, efforts and intelegence, then why not.

If you think that you can change the development of Karnataka and give me one prospective point to prove that by making Kannada the only langauge in Karnata, you can bring the name of HD on the world map, then i will be 1st one in the line to support you whole heartedly.

Students work to improve water quality in Hubli -India

(CNN) -- The World Health Organization reports that 88 percent of the 1.8 million deaths resulting from diarrhea can be attributed to unsafe water or inadequate hygiene or sanitation.

Unfortunately, a significant population in the city of Hubli, India, fall victim to these causes, and they are not even aware of the cause.

The University of Southern California Hubli Water and Health Team is spending this summer implementing a project model that will improve these statistics in the community.

The team of six students, visiting from the University of Southern California, will guide a pilot project in the under-served community of S.M. Krishna Nagar.

Over the course of the next year, the Team will employ local college students to maintain the program and monitor the efficiency of the water purification technology.

And by subsidizing the cost for those living within S.M Krishna Nagar, the Team will be providing state-of-the-art purification systems at affordable prices, creating an important sense of ownership and empowerment for the people.

The team also plans to build awareness within the local community about the need to drink purified water. While the source of water currently received by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation is filtered, sewage leakage and the poor management of waste often contaminates drinking water on its way into the homes.

This means that while the water from these pipes or the bore wells may look clean, it can be hazardous to drink. To compound the issue, even water contained in holding tanks on vehicles that visit the community is by no means guaranteed to be of sufficient, purified quality. The tanks carrying the water are rarely cleaned and the taps through which the water is dispersed may easily be contaminated.

Families must be aware that the water they are provided is harmful to their health and provides a catalyst for breeding mosquitoes carrying malaria and other transferable diseases. Local reports have proven this, and communities in the past have fallen victim to water-related illnesses as a result of their consumption of unclean water.

The USC Hubli Water and Health Team team hopes to shed light on this threatening issue, as confronting the challenge of dirty drinking water is a "gateway" step towards achieving measured, sustainable improvements in a wide array of serious health related issues.

Through education at key points of community influence and the measured introduction of new technologies that encourage responsibility over simply charity, the Team will use its time in Hubli to affect change that is both scalable and sustainable

I share the same views. For the past 5 to 6years, whenever I read any newspaper I try to locate Hubli/Dharwad in the weather column and its very disappointing as it is missing.

Hope, with Meterological Department Office coming to Hubli (as Prof Veeramahantesh Swamy told us in one of the monthly meetings), we should find our city in the weather column.

Going further, I strongly feel that Hubli/Dharwad should be very much on the weather map of India, when it is shown in TV News channels.. If you consider Andhra, it is represented by Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Vizag. At the same time Tamil Nadu by Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. Kerala has Kochi and Trivandrum. But when it comes to Karnataka, it is Bangalore only. Few times Mangalore is there to represent coastal Karnataka. But nothern part of Karnataka is not represented.

I feel that on a day to day basis, weather in northern parts of Karnataka is different from southern parts. Hence it is good that this region is also represented.
